how to choose yarn alternatives for the project?
I decided to write this blog post because I very often receive requests to help you choose an alternative yarn for my patterns. And many of you admit that you still struggle to understand what to take into consideration when buying a yarn.
First of all, the choice of yarn cannot be a random choice! Every pattern is written with a specific yarn in mind. And the best choice is to always use the same yarn as recommended in the pattern. However, it is very common that this yarn may not be available in your region or the colour selection is not of your preference or it may be out of your budget etc. If so, not everything is lost! You can still enjoy this new gorgeous sweater or a winter hat because there is so many alternatives available on the market that you are more than sure to choose something for yourself. It just has to be a smart choice. If you do not choose your yarn correctly, you may end up with a sweater that is way too small or way too big!
I could write you know about different yarn weights such as DK, Sport, Lace etc but I like to keep things simple so I will share with you my approach that proved to be successful for me on many occasions. And on top of that I will share with you examples for alternative yarns for some of my patterns so you get a better understanding of how it works.

Postanowiłam napisać ten wpis, ponieważ bardzo często otrzymuję od was prośby o pomoc w wyborze alternatywnej włóczki do moich wzorów. Wiele z was przyznaje, że wciąż nie bardzo wiecie na co należy zwrócić uwagę przy zakupie włóczki.
Przede wszystkim wybór włóczki nie może być przypadkowy! Każdy wzór jest napisany z myślą o określonej włóczce. Najlepszym wyborem jest zawsze używanie tej samej włóczki, która jest zalecana we wzorze. Jednak bardzo często zdarza się, że ta włóczka nie jest dostępna w Twoim regionie lub jej kolor nie odpowiada Twoim preferencjom, lub może wykraczać poza Twój budżet itp. Jeśli tak, nie wszystko jest stracone! Nadal możesz cieszyć się tym nowym wspaniałym swetrem lub czapką zimową, ponieważ na rynku dostępnych jest tak wiele zamienników, że z pewnością wybierzesz coś dla siebie. Tylko to musi być mądry wybór. Jeśli nie dobierzesz prawidłowo włóczki, możesz zrobić swetrem, który jest o wiele za mały lub za duży!
Mogłabym teraz napisać o różnych wagach włóczki, takich jak DK, Sport, Lace itp., ale lubię proste rozwiązania , więc podzielę się z Tobą moim podejściem, które przy wielu okazjach okazało się dla mnie skuteczne. Ponadto podzielę się z wami przykładami zamienników włóczek do niektórych moich wzorów, abyście lepiej zrozumieli, jak to działa.
what to take into consideration when choosing an alternative yarn?
Each yarn comes with information about its weight and length. This is the information that you will find on every ball of yarn, eg. Snefnug from Camarose yarn holds 110m in 50gr. If you look for an alternative you should look for a yarn with similar values.
To validate your choice you should also look at the recommended needles size for the yarn. If they are alike – that’s the match! If not, you should consider other possibilities. Good example here is Snefnug from Camarose, 50g/110m, recommended needles 4-6mm and Alpakka from Sandnes Garn, 50g/110m, recommended needles 3.5mm. The recommended needles for Snefnug are bigger than for Alpakka. Therefore it is very unlikely to achieve the same results with those 2 yarns. If you use Alpakka in the project where Snefnug is used, then it will end up smaller in size.
Final check is always a gauge. In every pattern there is information on how many stitches and rounds you have to knit with a yarn on a specific size of the needles to create a 10x10cm square. If you can recreate it with a yarn of your choice then it’s a good alternative. In this step you can also allow yourself some flexibility and choose different needles size to achieve the same result, but try to stay as close as possible to the recommendation. Eg., if pattern calls for a needles size 5mm and you can recreate the gauge with needles 5.5mm, that should be fine. However, if you have to use needles 7mm then the difference is rather too big.

To help you grasp the concept I have prepared a list of alternative yarns for some of my patterns just to give you an example of how alternatives can work. I hope it will be of help! However, I only share alternatives based on the metrics of the yarn and I personally didn’t have a chance to use all of them. That is why I also encourage you to make your own research as there is so many gorgeous yarns that I have never heard of before
